Sweet, Kirby, Sandercock, Desormeau, & Gill Win at Can-Am; 2014 Track Champions Crowned

Garden City NY… After two consecutive weeks of rainouts, Chapman’s Can-Am Motorsports Park returned to racing action on Friday, August 29, 2014. The nights racing action featured a complete show for all divisions while all the points champions were crowned for the 2014 season. The track also took a moment to remember Kevin Ward Jr., the driver who was tragically killed on August 9, 2014, from nearby Port Lyden, New York.

Mike Trapp and Billy Eisele led the SUNY Canton Bear World, Whitesboro, PlowShop of Watertown, A-Verdi Storage Containers Late Models to the green flag. Mike Trapp used the bottom to take the lead over Billy Eisele, Elmer Stevenson, Charlie Sandercock and Phil Potts. Charlie Sandercock, the current point leader, used the bottom part of the speedway to slip into the second position as he began to track down Trapp at the front of the field. Trapp and Sandercock distanced themselves from the rest of the field while Phil Potts and Greg Belyea battled for the fifth position. At the halfway mark, Sandercock began to apply pressure on Trapp for the lead while Eisele sat in third and Potts and Stevenson battled for fourth and fifth. Charlie Sandercock took the lead with two laps to go as he dived under Mike Trapp in turn four. Charlie Sandercock collected the win and the 2014 Pro Late Model Track Championship. Mike Trapp, Billy Eisele, Phil Potts and Elmer Stevenson rounded out the top five.

The Whitesboro Plow Shop, A-Verdi Storage Thunder Stock Division was led to the green by Pat Sullivan and Matt Marcinko. Phil Desormeau took the lead of lap number one over Matt Marcinko, Nick Trapp, Don Woodworth and Pat Sullivan. Nick Trapp lost a tire on lap 7 to bring out the yellow flag. On the restart, Matt Marcinko attempted to move under Phil Desormeau but Desormeau showed the power he had in his car as he continued to hold the lead. Phil Desormeau collected the win over Matt Marcinko, Patt Sullivan and Don Woodworth. Phil Desormeau also collected the 2014 Thunder Stock Points Crown.

Sid Harmer Jr. and Jamie Platt led the Dig Safely NY, Whitesboro Plow Shop of Watertown, Subway Sportsman to the green in their 25 lap feature event. Sid Harmer Jr led lap number one over Jamie Platt, Chris Thurston, Mike Prentice and Nick Webb. Nick Webb and Brandon Sweet quickly slipped into second and third position while Tiger Chapman sat in sixth looking to enter the top five. The caution waived on lap five when a car slowed in turn number four. On the restart, Nick Webb slipped under Sid Harmer Jr and took the lead while Brandon Sweet, Jamie Platt and Tiger Chapman filled out the top five. Brandon Sweet slipped to the inside Sid Harmer Jr. to take the second position. Meanwhile, Josh Van Brocklin and Luke Whittaker, who were first and second in points heading into the event were battling heavy for the sixth and seventh positions. The caution waved with eight laps left in the event when David Rogers was showing heavy smoke. On the restart, as the field was coming around to complete the lap, second in points, Luke Whittaker pulled out of line with a right rear flag tire, bringing out another caution period. On the restart, Nick Webb used the highline and allowed Brandon Sweet to pull in front of him to take the lead. Josh Van Brocklin entered the top five while Taylor Caprara slid around Tiger Chapman for third. Brandon Sweet went on to collect the victory over Nick Webb, Taylor Caprara, Jeff Stevenson and Josh Van Brocklin. Josh Van Brocklin took the 2014 Sportsman Track Championship.

Mike White and Rick Dusckas led the Pro Street Division Massey’s Furniture Barn, Whitesboro Plow Shop of Watertown, A-Verdi Storage Containers to the green in their 20 lap feature event. Mike White jumped out to the lead over Robert Martin and Milt Combs. Mike White and Robert Martin began a heavy battle for the lead as the field approached the halfway mark. Robert Martin took over control of the field while Shawn Kirby, the current points lead, sat in the third position watching as the battle in front of him unfolded. The caution waved on lap 10 when Steve Toomey spun in turn number four. On the restart, as the field was coming across the front stretch, leader Rob Martin slowed and came to a stop in turn one bringing out another yellow flag. Shawn Kirby and Mike White battled at the front of the field with White showing the edge. Shawn Kirby fought back on the inside and took control of the field. Shawn Kirby collected the win along with the 2014 Pro Street Track Championship. Mike Durham, Sid Harmer Sr., Dick Parkhurst and Irv Miller filled out the top five.

Brady Gill and Riley Gill led the Whitesboro Plow Show of Watertown, A-Verdi Storage Containers Novice Sportsman to the green. Brady Gill took the lead of lap one over Riley Gill, Amy Holland, Tyler Reynolds and Rob Graham. The top three began to spread themselves out from the rest of the field. Brady Gill collected the win over Riley Gill, Amy Holland, Tyler Reynolds and Hunter Schwander.

Chapman’s Can-Am Motorsports Park will return to racing action on Friday, September 5, 2014. The Thunder in the Thousand Island Series will return along with the GRIT Sportsman Series race. The Pro Street, Thunder Stocks, Mod Lites and Novice Sportsman will all be in competitive action.
