If an issue arises
that is not addressed within these rules the Chief Tech Inspector will render
the deciding factor.
At any time a discrepancy arises regarding any driver, part, component,
or entire car being allowed will be the absolute decision of track officials.
In the event that any car and
or driver has been competing with a rule infraction in the past, regardless of
the infraction or the length of time will have no involvement with the tech
decision if found not in compliance to these rules concerning any tech
inspection or protest situation.
The above statements
apply to all tech inspections and protest situations. Any car that becomes
overly competitive, action will be taken to determine the reason, tech
Inspectors decision is final.
SAFETY NOTE: All
rules regarding safety are with the intentions to assist in the defense of
injury and in no way offer any assurance of absolute protection. It is the
responsibility of driver, crew member(s), car owner(s) and or anyone in the
presents of hazardous conditions to maintain their personal safety.
1. CAR ELIGIBILITY: 1955 to current 6 or 8 cyl. engine only. No convertibles, four wheel drives, independent rear suspensions, sports cars (as determined by tech). Wheel base 100" minimum with 1" tolerance. Tow hooks or cables front and rear are mandatory.
1a. STRUT/TORQUE ARM TYPE CAR:
torque arm-front mount does not have to be mounted to transmission as with OEM,
front and rear mounts may be relocated no more than 6" in any direction
from original OEM mounting position, mounts may be reinforced. Torque arm may
be fabricated but must maintain OEM appearance and size within reason and
system must maintain OEM motive of operation as determined by tech and must be
inspected and approved.
2. SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Rules apply at all times. One way Radio required at all times when on track, Frequency 154.515. Snell-rated SA2000 or newer full faced helmet designed specifically for auto racing, SFI-approved full fire suit, fire retardant neck brace, gloves and shoes mandatory. Recommended: Fire retardant head sock and underwear. Roll bar padding mandatory in driver compartment (Fire retardant recommended).
3. CAR SAFETY REQUIREMENT: Driver-side window net required, minimum 16 inch by 20 inch ribbon or mesh style, and must be mounted so latch is at top front of window. Minimum three inch wide SFI-approved five point safety belt assembly required (Y-type shoulder harness not allowed), must be mounted securely to roll cage. Within 3 years from date of manufacture. Ignition” kill” switch, fuel main shut off and battery main shut off all required within easy reach of driver and all must be clearly marked “OFF” and “ON”.
All doors must be welded shut-interior gutted-all glass and molding removed-a full fire wall between driver and the engine and trunk compartments. Floor must run door to door and front to rear-no enclosing of interior or drivers compartment. No mirrors. A full screen must replace the windshield. Must be solid rod type throttle linkage with 2 throttle return springs. Aluminum (no fiberglass) high back, manufactured for Racing seat mandatory and must be securely fastened with 6 bolts, 4 on bottom and two on the back, to the frame or roll cage only. All cars must have the hood in place and securely fastened when starting their 1st lap of the race. Any material added or removed from car in the interest of safety will be strictly decided by the Chief Tech Inspector to be legal or not.
3a. ROLL CAGE: Mandatory 6 point roll cage must surround the driver and must be constructed of 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" outside diameter steel tubing with a 1/8" wall thickness. Welding of joints must be continuous around the entire joint, no partial beads or spot welding. Welding will be of good quality, excessive slag and overheating of steel (burn through) will be cause for rejection. The uprights must be mounted on the left and right sides of the frame with one upright in front and one behind driver on each side of frame. They must be securely welded to the flat horizontal portion of the frame not the kick ups. The four bars joining the uprights must be at least 2" above the helmet height of the driver when strapped in the car. There will be at least 3 horizontal bars on both sides of the car connecting the main uprights; these horizontal bars must have at least one set of vertical supports centered between the main uprights to tie the bars together. A diagonal bar from the top left bar down to the top horizontal bar in the driver's door is highly recommended. A horizontal bar at dash height must connect the front uprights. The rear uprights must be connected from the top of the left rear upright down to the bottom of the right rear upright. Any joint between two or more bars must be gusseted with at least 1/8" steel material for added strength. Flush grinding of welds is not permitted. Threaded pipe, angle iron, pipe fittings, lap weld pipe, soft metals such as aluminum, and channel iron will not be used. Any bars running through the engine and trunk compartments will be completely within the body panels of the car. A front hoop to protect the radiator may be used but will be at least 4" behind front body parts to prevent it from being used as a push bar. Two (2) additional horizontal bars behind the fuel cell to provide crush protection are highly recommended. Highly recommended minimum 16 gauge steel plate welded to outside of left side drivers roll cage bars.
4. ENGINE (OPEN): Cast-iron small block design V8 or 6 cyl-400 cubic inch maximum. All engine parts must remain stock OEM, including block and internal parts unless otherwise mentioned in these rules. Pistons: Flat top O.E.M. pistons allowed. 2 or 4 valve relief only, No pop-ups allowed. Forged piston optional. Rods: Steel I-beam rod allowed- stock length, no machining, polishing, or deburring allowed. Camshaft: Any hydraulic or solid type cam only. No roller cam system. Rocker Arms: Roller rocker arms allowed. No aftermarket shaft rockers. Studs: Rocker arm studs may be pinned or screw-in. Crank: No modifications EXCEPT for balancing. No lightening or boring allowed. Minimum crank weight of 46 pounds. Wet sump only. 1" plug mounted in pan above oil line recommended; may assist in not requiring the removal of pan for rotating assembly inspection. Must maintain stock bore and stroke combination for block applied to-up to.060 cylinder overbore permitted. Engine to chassis: GM to GM, FoMoCo to FoMoCo, Mopar to Mopar. Any engine is subject to being unacceptable to participate by track officials.
4b. Intake Manifold (open engine): Cast iron OEM or one of the following aftermarket alum. 4-bbl. single plane intake

a. Holes drilled in the throttle plates for proper idling.
b. Drilling, tapping, and plugging of unused vacuum ports.
c. Welding of throttle shaft to linkage arm.
d. Drilling of idle of high air correction jets.
e. Milling of center carburetor body metering block surface a maximum of ..015" on each side.
f. Removal of choke plate and shaft.
g. The jets may be changed as needed.
4d. Ignition: HEI type ignition system only. All components must maintain OEM design and location. No traction control system.
4e. ENGINE (CRATE):
Crate engine MUST remain as manufactured by GM.
Crate engine distributors MUST remain stock as supplied by GM (unaltered in any way).
The only allowed carburetors are as manufactured 4 barrel Holley # 4777
or HP 80541-1.
NOTE: GM factory seals may be removed-if one or more have been removed or tampered with, the engine will be immediately deemed an OPEN engine and must follow ALL rule guidelines of an OPEN engine regarding engine and car. Including but not limited to, min wt, carb, heads, intake.
4f. Recommend all open and crate eng-1” pipe plug welded in oil pan; may save removal of pan.
5. FUEL SYSTEM: Gasoline only, any octane.
5a. FUEL CELL: Mandatory 22 gallon max. capacity cell must be centered in trunk and if trunk floor is removed will not extend below the frame rails behind the rear axle. The fuel cell will be secured with a minimum of two 1" x 1/8" flat steel straps secured by 3/8" bolts. Fuel lines must be made of steel tubing or steel braided hose from fuel cell to carburetor through the center of driver's area with a fuel shut off valve painted a bright color (red, yellow, orange, or white) located next to the driver's seat. OEM rubber fuel hose and OEM fuel tanks are not allowed. Fuel lines through driver's compartment must be in steel pipe or conduit. A one-way check valve MUST be installed in the vent line to prevent spillage in the event of a roll over.
6. Fuel Pump: OEM type. Must maintain OEM location. No electric pumps.
7. EXHAUST SYSTEM: Headers are allowed, 1 5/8" tube only. Step or merged collectors are NOT allowed. 180º Headers are NOT allowed, but crossover headers are allowed. Fully welded exhaust highly recommended.
8. Aluminum pulleys allowed.
9. COOLING SYSTEM: Radiator stock location only, aluminum allowed. Add on electric fan allowed-but must maintain working OEM type mechanical fan at all times.
10. BATTERY/STARTER: One 12 volt passenger car battery only, must be mounted between and above frame rails, in engine compartment or trunk area, sealed from driver compartment, securely fastened to prevent contact with metal objects. Positive terminal must be covered. If located in trunk area must have external charging posts and fuel cell must be properly grounded with a strap from fuel cell cap ring to the chassis.
Starter must bolt in OEM location. Car must leave line up area on demand, unaided, or go to rear of effect race.
11. TRANSMISSION: OEM type only. Automatic: forward and reverse must be operational. Manual: all gears including reverse must be operational.
12. Flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, 11" minimum diameter operational torque converter, must be OEM or direct aftermarket replacement. No triple disc. Scatter proof bell housing (manual trans)-shatter blanket (auto trans) recommended.
13. REAREND: OEM car/pickup truck type housing only, does not have to match chassis manufacture. Under slung or over slung system allowed. Solid spool, no limited slip/traction control type systems. Floating axle type allowed.
14. BRAKES: Each wheel brake components must work properly at all times and are subject to inspection upon demand. Disc brakes and after-market pedal assembly allowed, with balance adjuster. Calipers and parts must be OEM or direct aftermarket replacement. No aluminum calipers, light weight drums or rotors (drilled). No shut-off or bias adjusting mechanisms.
15. WHEELS: 15" steel (no aluminum) minimum width 7", maximum width 8", any offset, manufactured for racing only. Steel beadlock/wheel plugs/covers allowed any wheel position. 1/2" wheel studs/1" lug nuts are mandatory on all 4 wheels.
16. TIRES: Designed for racing only 8" maximum width as labeled on tire and must safely fit, as determined by Tech, the mandatory wheel size. Grooving, grinding and siping allowed.
17. MINIMUM WEIGHT: open eng 3000 lbs. crate eng 2700 lbs. crate wt. subject to change.
18. FRAME: OEM frame style front clip-no exclusive tubing type. A-frames, engine, as well as all other components must remain in stock O.E.M. location unless otherwise specified in the rules. Full frame cars can have rear frame between center of rear end housing tube back to end of frame replaced with 2"x3". Unibody cars can have the frame replaced with 2"x3" from 36" rear of centerline of front wheels back to end of frame and must follow original OEM contour in rear axle housing area. Front frame on all cars can be replaced forward of the steering box and idler arm only (front steer cars) with tubing.
Engine location note: front sparkplug on either side cannot be further back than the relevant side lower ball joint. If further substantial evidence of EXCESSIVE engine setback is determined by tech inspector, this will take priority over the sparkplug to ball joint method and will be dealt with. Frame may be reinforced in the interest of safety-must be inspected and approved by tech.
19. SUSPENSION: OEM type design only. All parts/components must
remain in OEM location unless otherwise specified in the rules.
19a. JACKING/LOAD BOLTS, ADJUSTABLE SPRING CUPS: Allowed all wheel positions.
19b. OEM type ball joint only. Stock configuration steel aftermarket non-adjustable upper a-frames allowed. Chassis cross-shaft mounts for upper A-frames may be fabricated and relocated maximum 4" in any direction from OEM location. Tie rod ends may be replaced with hiem joints. Steering column may be replaced for safety. Any relocating, cutting, reinforcing, or otherwise changing any part/component from its original OEM form or location must be inspected and approved by tech.
19c. OEM or aftermarket magnetic coil and leaf springs. Spring brands may be interchanged.
19d. SHOCKS: 1 steel bodied non-adjustable, no Schrader valves, shock per wheel. May be remounted, if remounted must be inspected and approved by tech. Max shock cost (list) $100/ea
19e. DRIVESHAFT: All components steel only, painted white with a minimum 1/8" thick x 2" wide sling located maximum 6" to the rear of front of U joint.
20. BODY: GM to GM, FoMoCo to FoMoCo, Mopar to Mopar. No air dams, skirts or other aerodynamic enhancing equipment. Maximum width measured anywhere along the contour 82". Hood must be sealed at back to protect driver.
20a. SPOILER: Securely fastened, no wider than body, maximum height 5"- measure from deck straight up (not at an angle) to top of spoiler, at backside of spoiler.
20b. HOOD SCOOP: Maximum size 20"w x 20"w x 3"h securely fastened not impairing vision.
20c. VISOR/SUN BLOCK: Pillar to pillar maximum 5" from top of windshield opening down.
20d. RUB RAILS: Optional, securely fastened, maximum 2" steel tubing flush to body between the wheel openings, and also rear quarter panels, 45 degree angle with capped ends, no sharp edges.
20e. BUMPERS: Tubing replacement type only. No sharp areas.
Tech INSPECTION Policies and Procedures: An inspection can be demanded anytime once entered pit gate and or after any race event, any position including did not finish. DRIVER only can refuse a tech inspection and will forfeit the affected event money and points as well as all points accumulated at the affected track (lose of accumulated points applies only to refusing a tech inspection-does not apply to refusing a protest). Not being the driver’s regular car has no relationship to the outcome regarding any tech inspection, driver or tech official’s decision.
Tech AREA Policies and Procedures: Questions/input will be addressed as possible by the officials. Verbal or physical action directed toward officials or other racers will not be tolerated. Driver along with anyone else that has been allowed in tech area must remain with their designated car unless otherwise instructed by official(s).
TECH INSPECTION situation - Only driver/car will be allowed in tech area, driver must remain in car until otherwise instructed by official(s)-a designated number of crew members per car will be allowed by tech officials IF and WHEN needed.
PROTEST situation - Only driver/car being protested will be allowed in tech area-a designated number of crew members will be allowed by tech officials IF and WHEN needed.
PROTEST: Chief Tech Inspector has the authority to disallow any protest he feels inappropriate or has not properly followed protest procedures and his decision(s) will be final concerning any issues. Driver only can refuse to be protested and will forfeit the money and points for the affected event only. There are two types of protest, visual or major. Protest must be LEGIBLY hand written IN DETAIL, with EXACT amount CASH only US funds, submitted by driver or one crew member to Tech Inspector within 10 minutes of end of feature. Visual or major protest.
FOUND LEGAL: Car being protested receives protest money. FOUND ILLEGAL: Protester is refunded protest money.
MULTI-ITEM PROTEST: Maximum of 4 items allowed per protest,
all must be entered at same time. The written protest must specify which
protested item is the first ($200) item, rendering the remaining protested
items $100 each. This will determine the outcome concerning the protest money.
Each protested item and its determined dollar amount will follow the same
policy as listed above in the found legal and found illegal sections.
Concerning disqualification: Any 1 protested item deemed illegal by
Chief Tech Inspector will render car and driver disqualified from the affected
event. Not being the driver’s regular car has no relationship to the outcome
regarding any protest.
Visual Protest: $75.00 per issue/component
Major Protest: $200.00, $100.00 for each addition item during protest.
$500.00 will be ADDED for any protest item requiring removal of engine, transmission, transaxle, rear end housing, crankshaft, oil pan. As determined by tech.
