Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park to Honor 2011 Champions at Annual Awards Banquet on January 7th; Kart Banquet Will Take Place on January 6th
By Craig Revelle - Finish Line Web Design - December 16, 2011
The year 2011
has all but come and gone, but there remains some unfinished
business before Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park can officially
put the past season to rest.
The annual awards banquet honoring the champions and top
finishers of 2011 will take place on Saturday, January 7th
at Savory Café Downtown (Best Western), located at 300 Washington
Street in Watertown, New York. A very
generous point fund has been put together that will see champions
and top finishers receive a substantial amount of money at the
awards banquet. With
the help of some great sponsors throughout 2011, Chapman’s Can
Am Motorsports Park is proud of the point fund that they have put
together for their competitors. “We worked
hard this past year to put together sponsorship to be able to
reward our racers for their season accomplishments”, says track
General Manager Alana Moncrieff.
“We had some great new sponsors come on board with us
this year, and together with the existing companies that already
had a long-standing relationship with us here at Can Am we have
been able to put together a substantial point fund.
We are very excited about this, and we hope to continue to
build on this over the coming years”. In 2009 and
2010 Billy Dunn set the pace in the Big Block Modified division at
Can Am. When the
track eliminated the class in 2011, Dunn piloted a Small Block
Modified around Can Am, and the results remained the same.
Dunn captured seven feature wins, 16 top fives, and 17 top
tens en route to the Dig Safely New York, Davidson Auto Group,
Laura Penazek-Whitney State Farm Insurance 358 Modified track
championship. Dunn
will take home $2000 for his efforts from the track, plus an
additional $500 from Cheney Tire in Watertown.
Josh
VanBrocklin won the SUNY Canton Sportsman Series Championship in
2010, but came up short in his bid for his first ever Can Am track
championship. In 2011
though, he was determined to conquer the season long battle, and
had a career year with eight feature wins, 15 top five finishes
and 17 top tens. He
captured the Clarence Henry Coach, American Traditions
Motorsports, and Laura Penazek-Whitney State Farm Insurance
Sportsman track championship.
VanBrocklin will receive $1000 for his efforts during his
championship season. When you
think of Late Model racing at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park
you cant help but think of Lee Gill.
Gill was a mainstay in the Late Model division through his
early years of racing until the class went away in the early 90s.
When the class was resurrected with today’s version of
the Late Model division Gill was once again a dominant force.
His seven wins, 15 top fives and 15 top tens vaulted him to
the top of the standing late in the year and he captured the 2011
Party Rentals, Junction Boyz Inc., Laura Penazek-Whitney State
Farm Insurance Pro Late Model track championship. Gill
will receive $1000 at the banquet for his 2011 season
accomplishments. The 2011 SUNY
Canton, Deline’s Auto Body, Laura Penazek-Whitney State Farm
Insurance Street Stock championship went to Sid Harmer Sr. Harmer
had a dominating season with 11 feature wins, 17 top fives and 18
top tens this season, and captured the title by a phenomenal 148
points. Harmer will
be honored at the banquet for his great season, and will receive
$1000 as the Street Stock champion. Ray Bechler
returned to Can Am full time in 2011 after a limited schedule in
2010 in the Waite’s Toyota, Waite Motorsports, Deline’s Auto
Body, Laura Penazek-Whitney State Farm Insurance Thunder Car
division. He set the
pace with six feature wins, 16 top five finishes and 19 top tens
on his way to the track championship.
Bechler will receive $500 for his efforts in 2011. Rich
Rainville captured the Laura Penazek-Whitney and Subway STARS Mod
Lite track championship in 2011.
Rich had three feature wins along with 17 top five and 17
top ten finishes en route to the championship.
The Mod Lite drivers will be honored for their
accomplishments and will receive money and contingencies from the
STARS Mod Lite Series Steven
Gilmore began the 2011 season with five feature wins in a row and
added another six wins throughout the year to capture the Laura
Penazek Whitney State Farm Insurance Pure Stock division
championship. In
addition to his 11 feature wins, Gilmore also posted 15 top five
finishes and 15 top tens. On Friday,
January 6th Can Am will also honor the champions and
top finishers in the Karting classes at Savory Café Downtown
(Best Western) at 300 Washington Street in Watertown.
2011 champions Kyle Savage, Anthony Rasmus, Tyler Ayen,
Remington Marqu, Dan Side, Milt Combs, and Ryan Rerick and the
rest of the top finishers from 2011 will be honored.
Please make your reservations before January 3rd.
Adults are $20, 12 and under is $15. “Congratulations
to all of our champions in 2011”, says Burdick. “We look forward to the banquet and celebrating the past
season”. Our first
event of 2012 will take place on New Years Day with the annual
Hangover Enduro. From
there, the track will open for the 2012 season with open practice
on April 14th and 15th, with our season
opener scheduled for April 21st. More

at Chapman’s Can-Am Garden City NY… A warm spring evening along with a packed pit area of almost 100 cars greeted fans at Chapman’s Can-Am Motorsports Park for the Tim Dillenback Memorial Night sponsored by The Junction Boyz Inc. Headlining the nights racing action were the Modifieds, Sportsman, Late Models, Street Stocks, Thunder Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Mod Lites and Purestocks.
The Party Rentals, Junction Boyz Inc., Laura Penazek-Whitney State Farm Insurance Late Models began the nights feature action with the 20 lap main event. As the leaders came out of turn four to the front straight away, a mid pack spin collected numerous cars and brought out the red flag. The red flag collected Elmer Stevenson, Greg Peake, Lee Gill, Chuck Meyer, Dean Patterson, Edward Hayden and Andrew Hennessy with varying degrees of damage. As the field was realigned and the green was flown, Erik Cupernall, Mark Webb, Greg Belyea, Phil Potts and Jordan Keruskie comprised the top five. Greg Belyea moved to the front of the field and took the lead and set the speed for the field. At the half way point, Greg Belyea continued to show the way as Phil Potts slipped into second, Mark Webb, Elmer Stevenson and Mike Ramos rounded out the top five. As the final laps closed, the leader entered lap traffic. The yellow flew again when Jordan Keruskie spun in turn number one in two as he was preparing to get lapped by the leaders. Track regulars OJ White and Chuck Monica led the field to the green as OJ White showed the way leading lap one over Chuck Monica, Rob Martin, Matt Marcinko and Ray Bechler. When the green flag was once again waived, leader OJ White had a slow start which caused him to fall into the pack. The field began to settle into a comfort zone when Chuck Monica, who was running in the second position, slowed in turn number three. Rob Martin sat at the head of the field with the rest of the top five comprised of Matt Marcinko, Ray Bechler, Jock Symonds and OJ White. The very last yellow of the race was when Jeremy Lueck stopped against the front stretch wall and Jim Jones stopped in turn three in separate incidents. Lap 16 found the first driver exiting the speedway surface as Steve Bilow slipped off the high side of turn three on to pit road. The first yellow flag of the race flew on lap 17 when Gage Morin tried to slow onto pit road in turn number three. The 20 lap Clarence Henry Coach, American Traditions Motorsports, Laura Penazek-Whitney State Farm Insurance Sportsman Division Feature was up subsequently with Dana Aikins and Chris Thurston setting the pace for the field. Finish Line Web Design At
the season ending drivers meeting back in November, Chapman’s Can Am

to make 2011 a successful year at Can Am.
One idea that was brought up was to seek division sponsorship
from area businesses. Can
Am General Manager Alana Moncrieff went to work, and put together a very
strong sponsorship package and brought many new businesses to the Can Am
family, as well as securing funding from the great businesses that have
continuously supported racing in the North Country for several years. Chapman’s
Can Am Motorsports Park is pleased to announce that Laura
Penazek-Whitney State Farm Insurance has signed on as title sponsor of
all divisions at Can Am in 2011. Laura
Penazek-Whitney State Farm Insurance has already been a major sponsor at
the track the last several seasons, and the extreme generosity will help
all of the racers this year at Can Am by increasing the season ending
point fund. “We

Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park had to take a step back into 2010 as
they honored top finishers and champions from last season. Over
200 people gathered at the Dulles State Office Building in Watertown,
New York to enjoy a wonderful meal catered by Savory Café, and the
awards ceremony that followed. The
night began with a very well deserved award
being handed out to track sponsors Laura
Penazek-Whitney of State Farm Insurance, and Mike Perry of SUNY Canton
college for their extremely generous contributions to Chapman’s Can Am
Motorsports Park, and their continued support to auto racing in the
north country. Both SUNY Canton and Laura Penazek-Whitney of State
Farm took home the Sponsor of the Year award. “I
cant even put into words how thankful we are to Mike Perry and Laura
Penazek-Whitney of State Farm for everything they do for us here at
Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park”, says an emotional Tiger Chapman,
addressing the banquet audience. “If it wasn’t for their
generosity, and the support of all of our sponsors, we would not be able
to do what we do here”. Another
special award that was given out was to the most dedicated driver to our
sport. Without a doubt, Lafargeville, New York native Lee Gill
best exemplifies that description, and was honored with the most
dedicated in 2010. Freeman
Racing Enterprises Perfect Attendance awards were given out, with a draw
amongst all candidates in each division. Matt Marcinko won the
perfect attendance draw worth $100 for the thunder cars, Verne Harris
won the draw for the Pure Stocks, Ryan Scott and Taylor Caprara won $100
representing the IMCA Modifieds and Street Stocks respectively.
$250 perfect attendance draws were given out for the Modifieds,
Sportsman and Late Models. Tim O’Brien, Josh VanBrocklin and
Mike Trapp were the winners. Sid
Harmer’s Auto put up $200 for the driver in the Street Stock class
that posted the most heat race wins in the regular season for 2010, and
fittingly, Sid Harmer won it as he picked up the most heat victories. He
also gave it back to the track to give away in 2011. Phil
Walker, of Lisbon, New York picked up $1000 from Mohawk Valley Community
College. Walker had his name in the draw with every driver that
had won a race at Can Am in 2010, including heat races. A
sportsmanship award was handed out to the driver in each division who
best displays sportsmanship, and was selected by Can Am chief tech
inspector Alana Moncrieff. 2010 Sportsmanship award winners were John
Williams in Thunder cars, Vern Harris in Pure Stock, Rick Duskas in IMCA
Modifieds, Sid Harmer Sr. in Street Stocks, Greg Belyea in Late Models,

Stock champion, Sid Harmer Sr. took the top spot in the Street Stock
division, Lee Gill was the 2010 Late Model champ, Tim O’Brien topped
the 358 Modified division, and Billy Dunn was the Big Block Modified

title. The top 10 in each division, as well as the top 12 in each
SUNY Canton series were also recognized for their achievements in 2010,
with over $9000 given out in the SUNY Canton series, as well as a
truckload of prizes to Tim O’Brien, which included a 40 inch plasma
television, SUNY Canton apparel and more. “We
gave out over $25000 tonight in prize money, and next year will be even
more”, states track General Manager Alana Moncrieff. “We have
secured sponsorship already for next year’s point fund, and that will
see the 358 Modified champion get a minimum of $2000, Sportsman, Late
Model and Street Stock champions will receive a minimum of $1000, and
the thunder car champion will receive a minimum of $600”.
Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park is still seeking additional division

increase in next year’s point fund is due to the generosity of the
title sponsors of each division. Laura Penazek-Whitney of State
Farm Insurance has signed on as a title sponsor for all division at Can

SUNY Canton Named Title Sponsor of Street Stock Division at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park; Sponsoring Free Admission for Ages 17 and Under Craig Revelle –
Finish Line Web Design Over
the past few weeks, Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park General Manager
Alana Moncrieff has been actively seeking new sponsors to help make the
upcoming season a successful one for everyone involved.
However, we certainly don’t overlook the existing sponsors that
have supported the track for the past several years.
Today, Can Am is very excited to announce that SUNY Canton has
signed on as the title sponsor of the Street Stock division for the
upcoming season, as well as sponsoring the free admission for ages 17
and under for every race night at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park. In
the past, SUNY Canton has been well represented at Can Am with
involvement in the SUNY Canton Street Stock, SUNY Canton Sportsman and
SUNY Canton 358 Modified events. SUNY
Canton also hosted the Kangaroo Kid’s Club at the track, and sponsored
several racecars from the area. Their
involvement in our sport didn’t just end at Can Am, they were well
known throughout the racing community throughout the entire state. “We
are very excited to have SUNY Canton back at Can Am this season.
We understand that they have had some budget cuts this year, and
their involvement in racing is less than in years past.
With that being said, we will make sure SUNY Canton gets maximum
exposure for their sponsorship dollars”, says Alana Moncrieff.
“Mike Perry at SUNY Canton has been a great ambassador for this
sport, and done an outstanding job getting SUNY Canton recognized
through motorsports, and we look forward to working with them again this
year”. In
addition to being title sponsor of the Street Stock division, and the
$500 bonus for the Street Stock champion in 2011, SUNY Canton will also
be sponsoring the free admission for ages 17 and under all season long.
Valid ID will be mandatory in order take advantage of this offer,
and no exceptions will be made. “I
can’t thank Mike Perry and SUNY Canton enough for everything they do
for this sport. On top of
the sponsorship, they are also coming out to the track to lend a hand
getting the place ready for the season”, adds Burdick.
“They will fix up the picnic table area, they are building a
gazebo, and will be helping to put up signs around the track”. SUNY
Canton (State University of New York at Canton) is a public,
coeducational, residential college located on a spacious campus along
the banks of the Grasse River. There are miles of beautiful trails

2011 Season Opener Set For Saturday, April 16th at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park Craig Revelle –
Finish Line Web Design With
frigid temperatures and snow on the ground as we approach the middle of
January, the upcoming season may not be on the forefront of everyone’s
minds, but everyone is hard at work at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports
Park putting the finishing touches on the 2011 racing season at the
Lafargeville, New York track. A lot of
changes have taken place over the off-season, with the Big Block
Modifieds no longer on the schedule.
The 358 Modifieds will now be the headline division, and with the
addition of the new CT525 Crate Motor as an option for that class, Can
Am officials hope that it will provide an opportunity for growth in the
division. The Small Block
Modifieds will be DIRTcar sanctioned and race weekly for $1200 to win.
“We
feel the new CT525 crate motor will be a great addition to our sport”,
says Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park General Manager Alana Moncrieff.
“It is affordable, it will be a strong competitive option for
our racers, and we look forward to seeing the outcome this coming
season”. The
Sportsman class won’t see any drastic changes, as they will continue
to be DIRTcar sanctioned, and will race weekly for $500 to win.
The Pro Crate Late Models will be unsanctioned in 2011 with an
open tire rule allowing the Hoosier LM 40 tires, as well as the tire
package from other area tracks. The Late Models will race for $400 to win each week.
The Street Stock winner will take home $300 each night.
The IMCA Modifieds will continue to be IMCA sanctioned and will
race for $200 to win, as will the Mod Lites, who are back on a full time
basis in 2011. Pure Stocks and Thunder cars will race for $125 to win. “The
open tire rule for our Late Model class will give the racers from
further down the state the opportunity to come up to Can Am and race
with us without having to buy new tires.
We hope that it will help us grow this division at Can Am in 2011
and in the years to come. The
Late Model division has a lot of potential, and it is an exciting class
to watch”, says Burdick. Chapman’s
Can Am Motorsports Park will open for practice on Saturday, April 9th
and Sunday, April 10th.
Race teams will be able to take advantage of the track time to
shake their cars down before the season gets underway on Saturday, April
16th. The 358
Modifieds will race 40 laps, with the winner taking home $2000.
The Sportsman division will race 30 laps, and $1000 will go to
the race winner. The Pro
Crate Late Models will race for $600 to win in a 25 lap main event, and
the Street Stocks are scheduled for a 20-lap feature, paying $400 to
win. “We
have virtually doubled the purse in all divisions for opening night.
Hopefully we can get off to a good start in 2011, and set the
tone for a great season at Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park”, adds
Burdick. The 2011
racing season might still be in the distance, but the track will be in
action early, with the 100 lap Hangover 100 that was originally
scheduled for January 2nd.
The event was postponed and will now be run on Sunday, January 30th,
and Can Am Motorsports Park officials just recently announced the
addition of a demolition derby to follow the Enduro race.
Rules and entry forms for both events can be found at the
Chapman’s Can Am Motorsports Park website. For more information regarding the CT525 crate motor or rules
